The Pablo Sorozabal String Quartet Composition Competition was established in 1983 by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa with the aim of promoting contemporary musical creation and paying tribute to one of the greatest Basque composers of the 20th century. Pablo Sorozabal (1897–1988), author of a prolific and versatile body of work ranging from zarzuela to symphonic and chamber music, remains an essential figure in the musical history of Gipuzkoa and Spanish culture.
Conceived as a platform for emerging composers, the competition is open to creators up to 36 years of age, supporting young talent and enriching the string quartet repertoire. Over its successive editions, the competition has become a benchmark in the field of chamber music, encouraging the creation of new works and ensuring their dissemination through premieres by renowned string quartets. The winning work also receives institutional recognition and helps to project new generations of composers onto the international contemporary music scene.
The jury members, Luis Codera Puzo, Helga Arias Parra and Francisco Domínguez Robles, has selected Pablo Franchelli (Argentina, 1989) as the winner of this year’s competition with his work “Surcando un mar de sueños inmemoriales” (Sailing a sea of iImmemorial dreams).
The prize includes the premiere of the work by the Quatour Béla at the 87th San Sebastián Musical Fortnight, its inclusion in the 17th Musikagileak Contemporary Music Circuit, and a net prize of €3,000.
